MELBOURNE, Australia — Defending champion Rafael Nadal has won his third-round match at the Australian Open, beating Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany 6-4, 6-2, 2-6, 7-5.

The second-seeded Nadal, who beat Roger Federer in last year's final at Melbourne Park, broke Kohlschreiber's serve in the 11th game of the fourth set Friday. He held serve to take the match, closing with a forehand winner at Rod Laver Arena.
