Apparently their cameo in the 1999 film Mystery Alaska wasn't enough outdoor hockey for the New York Rangers.
According to the New York Post, the Rangers wanted to a taste of the Fenway ice surface on Friday afternoon but Hockey East commissioner Joe Bertagna nixed the Blue Sweaters from the opportunity of a lifetime.
The report indicates that the NHL gave the Rangers permission to hit the ice on Friday afternoon — just one day before the Rangers took on the Bruins at the TD Garden. But with two collegiate hockey games slated for Friday night, Bertagna was fearful that the pros would damage the surface.
“We’d have loved to have been able to get the Rangers on, but we felt there wouldn’t be enough time to ensure the quality of the ice for the afternoon game,” Hockey East PR director Peter Souris told The Post. “If we only had the night game, there would have been no issue.”
