According to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen, the recently fired Notre Dame coach has accepted a position as the offensive coordinator of the Kansas City Chiefs. The move could be announced within the next 24 to 48 hours, according to team and league sources.
Weis’ connections in Kansas City are numerous: He and Chiefs head coach Todd Haley worked together as assistants with the Jets, and he served under Chiefs GM Scott Pioli, who was the Patriots vice president of player personnel prior to this season. Pioli and Weis won two Super Bowls while with New England.
ESPN reports that the Bears were also in the hunt for Weis.
“Charlie’s a guy I have a great amount of respect for as a coach,” Haley said during a press conference on Wednesday. “He’s a coach that system-wise, I would say we’re as close as you can be. Charlie’s a guy I consider a friend and I’ve talked to throughout the year, no different from some of the other guys I lean on for things and advice.”
