“He hasn’t contacted me to inquire about that,” Lawton told the St. Petersburg Times. “That absolutely did not happen.”
The Rangers and Lightning have had their struggles this season. The Rangers are mired in a four-game losing streak, while the Lightning rank near the bottom of the Eastern Conference.
“The reality is, as a management team, these are critical times for decision making, and how we do this week, in a lot of ways, it’ll determine whether people continue on,” Lawton told the St. Petersburg Times. “Hopefully, the players recognize that, because that’s what’s at stake.”
The Rangers may have reached a turning point in their season as well. During their four-game losing streak, the team has been tied or behind in each game for all but 31 seconds. Given their anemic offense, it is easy to see why the Rangers may have interest in Lecavalier.
Rangers center Chris Drury isn’t ready to throw in the towel on the season.
“We have a lot of negative stuff coming down on this team right now,” Drury told The Canadian Press. “We have to do the best we can to stay together. We got into this little four-game together, and we are going to get out of it together.”
If the Rangers turn their offense around, there could be less need for a player like Lecavalier.
