CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — Boston College and Boston University battled to a 1-1 tie in Tuesday night's women's Beanpot consolation game. BC netminder Kiera Kingston stood on her head as she turned away 32 of the 33 shots she faced on the night. Despite nearly doubling the Eagles in shots (33-17), the Terriers couldn't solve Kingston enough to escape with the win.
Boston College started the scoring late in the initial period as Allie Thunstrom was in the right place at the right time. Teammate Shannon Webster's shot from the point was initially blocked by a BU forward, but the loose puck found Thunstrom's stick just outside the crease. She sent a high wrister to the blocker side of BU netminder Alissa Fromkin for her 18th goal of the season. Despite both teams getting plenty of chances on the power play, the second period passed without a goal. BU went 0-for-1 while BC was 0-for-3 on the man advantage.
But the Terriers wouldn't go down without a fight in the third and they were finally able to put one past Kingston's on the power play. Laurel Koller took a shot from the point and Kasey Boucher pounced on the rebound and found the back of the net at 12:44. Jillian Kirchner picked up the second assist on the play.
The overtime period saw plenty of action as well as both teams peppered the goalies with shots. Tempers even started to flare as the referees awarded a game disqualification to Mary Restuccia for fighting at 2:36. The Terriers had the best chance in OT on a last-second shot by BU blue-liner Tara Watchorn off a face-off, but once again Kingston was there to close the door. Both teams had plenty of quality chances but ended up settling for the draw, the first in women's Beanpot history.
