Speedy Boston College Cruises Past Harvard 6-0 in Penalty-Filled Beanpot Opener

Final, BC 6-0: Harvard couldn't keep up with BC's speed as the Crimson were crushed 6-0. The Eagles will head to the Beanpot finals for the second time in two years.

BC got tallies from six different players while Steven Whitney (two assists), Sneep (one goal, two assists) and Dumoulin were able to finish with multiple-point games.

Third period, 17:45, BC 6-0:
Needham native and BB&M alum Chris Venti came in for Muse to finish out the game between the pipes for BC.

Third period, 14:02, BC 6-0: Richter can't get a pad on Sneep's one-timer from the point as the Eagles get their sixth of the game and third of the frame. Sneep now has a goal and two assists.

That will do it for Richter as he is relieved by fellow keeper John Riley who has played less than two minutes this season.

Third period, 13:05, BC 5-0:
Gibbons gets a wide-open net on the right side to put the Eagles up 5-0. It was his 10th of the season and second point of the night. He's now the active leader in Beanpot points.

Third period, 13:23, BC 4-0: Grimshaw joins Biega in the bin and that's the end of his night. It also calls for yet another 5-on-3 advantage for the Eagles.

Third period, 12:02, BC 4-0: Alex Biega is the latest Crimson skater to get called for a penalty as Harvard simply won't stay out of the box.

I imagine a lot of skating and very few pucks at practice tomorrow for coach Donato's squad.

Third period, 9:33, BC 4-0: We're going to a 3-on-3 here for a few seconds, folks. If this doesn't give you a good idea as to how chippy this one is getting, I don't know what will.

Third period, 8:01, BC 4-0: Things are getting ugly here as Harvard, already downa pair of men with the BC 5-on-3 power play, are starting to take cheap shots after the whistle.

Third period, 7:34, BC 4-0: Big surprise, another BC power play. Harvard really shot themselves in the foot in this one as its their ninth penalty of the night.

Third period, 6:01, BC 4-0: Kreider's leg gets a piece of a Brian Dumoulin slapper from the right side to beat Richter.

Third period, 4:31, BC 3-0: The crowd begins to fill in here finally as the fans are eagerly anticipating not just the second match but hopefully a strong final frame.

Third period, 2:25, BC 3-0: Just when they were building some momentum, Harvard is stuck with another penalty kill.

This time, Daniel Moriarty gets pegged with an interference call after roughing up Muse in the crease.

Third period, 2:00, BC 3-0:
I don't know what Ted Donato said during the break but Harvard is pouring it on here in the third. Leading scorer Louis Leblanc had a perfect chance in front but couldn't convert.

Second intermission, BC 3-0: BC is playing strong in their zone, but the group is starting to buy into Harvard's chippy play. Joe Whitney gets called for a hit after the whistle in which he sent a Crimson skater flying towards Muse, the Eagle netminder.

Although they popped a pair of goals, BC was out-shot 17-16 in the middle frame.

Second period, 18:46, BC 3-0:
BC is on the 5-on-3 advantage and itching to make it a 4-0 lead as Jack Christian gets whistled for a high hit.

Another goal will really open things up with less than two minutes to go in the second.

Second period, 16:45, BC 3-0:
Harvard had a good chance at getting on the board when Ryan Grimshaw powered his way in from the right side and get a shot off.

Grimshaw was driven into Muse at the tail end of the play and appeared to have rattled the BC netminder.

Second period, 13:12, BC 3-0:
Harvard will get another try at a power play as BC's Chris Kreider gets whistled for roughing.

Second period, 11:05, BC 3-0: We're going back to 4-on-4 puck as Harvard's Michael Del Mauro and BC's Jimmy Hayes both go off with the official call of 'handling the puck with hands.'

There wasn't much going on with the play but these refs are trying to take back control of this game, which is getting dirtier and dirtier as we go on.

Second period, 8:43, BC 3-0:
Freshman Pat Mullane catches Richter out of the net to grab his fifth goal of the year and put the Eagles up 3-0.

BC can thank their strong forecheckers for this one as they caused a pair of costly Harvard turnovers in the zone.

Second period, 5:12, BC 2-0:
Things are starting to get chippy here as players are looking to scrap after each whistle.

It wouldn't be a Beanpot match if there wasn't dirty play and hard hits right?

Second period, 0:52, BC 2-0:
Harvard's Fallstrom is carrying the Crimson offense on his back as he's everywhere tonight.

He has at least three of the team's eight shots thus far.

Second period, 0:52, BC 2-0:
Still 4-on-4, there was a scare in the Harvard crease as on of the Crimson defenders checked BC forward Steven Whitney into Richter.

Not only was the keeper down on the play, but the puck crossed the goal line. Luckily for Harvard, it was well after the whistle blew.

Second period, 0:18, BC 2-0:
Just like that, it's a 2-0 game as Matt Price blasts one past Richter for his second of the season.

Carl Sneep snags his12th assist of the season.

Second period, BC 1-0:
We're beginning this one 4-on-4 after a pair of penalties were called at the end of the first.

First intermission, BC 1-0: After BC opened up with a dominant first half of the period, Harvard slowly picked up the pace and took over the final minutes of action.

Let's see if the break will work against the Crimson who could use the momentum heading into the second period.

BC is leading Harvard 10-7 in shots and Smith's goal is the only thing separating these two squads as we prepare for the middle frame.

First period, 18:23, BC 1-0: Fallstrom and the Crimson put their best pressure of the night on Muse as the forward gets a pair of point-blank shots on.

First period, 17:15, BC 1-0: Harvard spins out a text-book penalty-killing job as the group blocked a pair of shots in front of Richter and were able to clear it out twice as well.

First period, 15:12, BC 1-0: Just as things begin to even out, Harvard gets called on another penalty.

Danny Biega gets called for high-sticking as BC will get its third power play of the period.

First period, 11:30, BC 1-0:
Boston College is leading Harvard in the shots department 6-2 with about eight minutes to go in the first.

The Crimson are struggling breaking the puck out of their zone — something likely to be addressed in the locker room.

First period, 9:40, BC 1-0: Alber and BC escape the penalty without a hitch as the Crimson were unable to set anything up. Not a good sign for Ted Donato's crew but let's see if the Eagles can build off the momentum as we're just over midway through the first frame.

First period, 7:23, BC 1-0: Patch Alber gets whistled for a penalty to put BC down a man just moments after the Eagles get on the board. Harvard would love to get that tally back.

First period, 4:54, BC 1-0: After Harvard's Chris Huxley picked up an interference call on a late hit, BC capitalized with the game's first goal.

Forward Ben Smith got the tally after a scrum in front for his 12th of the year. Brian Gibbons got the assist on the tally, his 20th of the season.

First period, 2:27, tie 0-0: We get our first penalty of the contest after a good back-and-forth start. It's Alex Fallstrom of Harvard picking up the interference call to give BC the power play.

There's still plenty — and I mean plenty — of good seating available at the Garden for this opener.

5:08 p.m.: Kyle Richter
will man the pipes for Harvard tonight while John Muse will protect BC's net. Richter is 2-8-1 this season while Muse owns a 8-6-2 record.

4:48 p.m.: BC and Harvard are just about to square off in their 38th Beanpot meeting.

The Eagles lead the overall Beanpot series 24-13 and have won the last eight straight. However, Harvard owns a 10-9 record when it comes to first-round games against the Eagles in the annual tourney.

12:30 p.m.: The TD Garden is bracing itself for arguably the most exciting event of the college hockey season as the Beanpot is just hours from kicking off.

Hitting the ice first will be Boston College and Harvard in a rematch of last year's consolation game. The Eagles snuck by the Crimson 4-3 in that one and are looking to make it back to the finals for the first time since winning it all in 2008.

BC is coming off a 5-2 win over Providence on Friday while Harvard recently snapped a five-game undefeated streak by falling to Princeton 2-1.
