After a disappointing effort against the Americans, Martin Brodeur will not be between the pipes for Canada's qualification game against Germany Wednesday. The honor will fall to Roberto Luongo, who shut out Norway last Tuesday and confirmed the news to CTVOlympics.ca.
The 30-year-old goaltender will attempt to avenge Canada's shocking upset to the U.S., when Brodeur made several crucial mistakes that led to goals for the Americans. He did make 25 saves in a victory against Switzerland, but his struggles against the United States isn't a new development. Brodeur has been awful of late in the NHL, posting an .889 save percentage in the stretch prior to the Olympics.
Brodeur will be Luongo's backup, although the team also has goalie Marc-Andre Fleury on the roster. For Canada to medal in ice hockey — a sport they invented — Luongo will have to step up and be the goalie the team was hoping Brodeur would be.
Following the Germany game on Tuesday, the team will have to do battle with hockey powerhouse Russia in the quarterfinals — assuming, of course, the Canadians can get by Germany, who is 0-3 on the Olympics.
