A moment of silence is in order on college campuses’ quads nationwide, as the inventor of the Frisbee has died at age 90.

Walter Frederick Morrison, a native of Utah, passed away in his Utah home, according to ksl.com.

Morrison invented the Frisbee in the 1940s after tossing a metal lid back and forth with his then girlfriend Lu, whom he would later marry.

Known as Fred, Morrison sold his product to Wham-O, and it became one of the world’s most popular toys. The Wham-O Web site has a dedication to Morrison, thanking him for “his wonderful invention and support to the Frisbee Disc brand for years.”

“As Frisbee discs keep flying through the air bringing smiles to faces, Fred’s spirit lives on,” the site says. “Smooth flights, Fred!”
