Jonathan Papelbon Learns From 2009, Will Incorporate More Pitches Into Arsenal All offseason long, Jonathan Papelbon couldn’t forget the excruciating way the Red Sox were bounced from the postseason, believing that his reliance on the fastball contributed to the Angels’ comeback win in Game 3 of the ALDS.

“I’m trying to get back to learning how to approach the hitters,” Papelbon told Tom Caron and Peter Gammons on Red Sox Spring Break Live on Sunday morning. Papelbon said he learned from his mistake and “got caught up” in using his fastball.

“I’ll try to throw my split for a strike … incorporate my slider a bit more,” Papelbon told viewers.
