Kevin Youkilis and Other Red Sox Veterans Get Jump on Spring Training Red Sox pitchers and catchers aren’t scheduled to report to Ft. Myers until Feb. 18, and the first full-squad workout isn’t until Feb. 24. But Kevin Youkilis, Jonathan Papelbon, Jon Lester and Manny Delcarmen couldn’t wait that long.

The four players arrived early in Florida this week to start loosening up for the season, MLB.com reports.

"I feel good," Youkilis told WBZ. "I'm just getting ready and preparing. We still have a couple of more weeks until we start up, but I'm just winding down with the hard workouts with weightlifting, because as you go on, you can't lift as much. I'm just trying to get the strength as high as I can and get in baseball shape during spring training. There's nothing that can prepare you for putting on the cleats and making the turn and getting the adrenaline rush of baseball.”

Minor leaguers are working out with Youkilis, Papelbon, Lester and Delcarmen at the team’s complex. It won’t be long before the rest of the club joins them. But having three key players and a reliever with something to prove already in camp sets a good example for the rest of the team and sends a strong message.

Vacation’s over.
