Mike Cameron will be out a "few" days with a groin issue, likely scratching him from playing in one of the two spring training games slated for March 3.
Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe first reported the news on Twitter. There is no word yet on how the injury happened, but it doesn't sound serious. Cameron will likely rest a couple of days before resuming action. Other nagging injuries that have bothered Boston recently are sore backs for Jonathan Papelbon and Daisuke Matsuzaka. The two players have returned to action without restrictions.
Nick Cafardo, also of the Globe, revealed Sunday that the Red Sox offered left-handed reliever Ron Mahay a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training — which Mahay declined. The 39-year-old came up in the Boston system as an outfielder before being converted to relief.
After spending 1997 and 1998 with the big-league club, the left-hander was claimed off waivers by the Oakland Athletics. He split 2009 between the Kansas City Royals and Minnesota Twins, posting a cumulative 4.29 ERA over 50 1/3 innings. He has spoken in the past of an interest in returning to the Boston organization one day.
