Damon is best known in New England for being the starting center fielder for the Boston Red Sox from 2002-2005. He was instrumental in the 2004 World Series title run, branding the team as "idiots" and later publishing an autobiography.
Of course, he then stunned the Sox faithful by signing a four-year deal with the New York Yankees which he just completed with another World Series ring in 2009.
Damon and his agent, Scott Boras, reportedly turned down two years and $14 million from the Yankees earlier in the offseason, sparking a months-long saga that only now seems to be concluding. It is unclear how much of his salary is deferred, if any.
Damon gives Detroit another much-needed left-handed batter who can patrol the outfield. He's likely to split time in left with incumbent Carlos Guillen, playing DH on the days he does not take the field.
