How would an artist capture Rex Ryan, Bart Scott and the boisterous Jets in clay, metal and sand? Ask George Sabra.
According to the Jets’ Web site, Sabra has crafted a sculpture of the Jets and five other NFL teams, three of which were displayed in Miami during Super Bowl week.
Sabra’s imagination led him to create the Jets’ sculpture.
“I picked them simply because of how I imagined the sculpture,” Sabra told the team’s Web site. “I imagine it as the Jets are flying, and so, too, the football is flying.”
The sculptor used clay and sand to create his NFL pieces, each measuring 3 feet tall by 2 feet wide by 2 feet deep. His Jets piece features welded wire bent into a football shape, something Sabra finds inspirational.
“I am very inspired by the shape of the football,” Sabra said. “I remember seeing the football on TV, standing in the air magnificently, like a planet moving. And all across the country during the Super Bowl, people watch the football moving across the screen, from the left to the right, the right to the left. It’s a magnetic effect.”
The artist has made NFL-team sculptures in each of the last two years, but he has crafted environmentally-friendly art for more than 22 years. He hopes Dallas will invite him to produce art for next year’s Super Bowl.
“Maybe we can make create some good art for next year in Dallas, Sabra said. “I would love to do that, make another sculpture about the Jets, and bring it to Dallas.”
