Alex Ovechkin Ejected in First Period of Capitals-Blackhawks Game The NHL’s leading scorer and Capitals star Alex Ovechkin was ejected in the first period of Sunday’s game against Chicago after getting a game misconduct penalty for boarding.

ESPN.com reports that with 7:44 left int he frame, Ovechkin checked Chicago’s Brian Campbell into the boards behind the Blackhawks net after Campbell had already released the puck. Campbell did not get up for several minutes and was then helped off the ice and into the dressing room.

Washington was down 1-0 at the time of the penalty.

Because he received a game misconduct penalty — in addition to a five-minute major for boarding — Ovechkin will be fined for the penalty, and the play will be reviewed by the commissioner’s office to determine whether or not it warrants a suspension.
