BC captured its ninth Hockey East championship Saturday night with a thrilling 7-6 overtime win against Maine. That combined with North Dakota’s 5-3 win over St. Cloud State in the WCHA title game locked up one of the tournament’s four No. 1 seeds for the Eagles.
BC will play Alaska-Fairbanks on Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in the first game of the day at the DCU Center. North Dakota will meet Yale at 5 p.m. in the second game, and the two winners will play in the regional final Sunday at 5:30 p.m.
New Hampshire and Vermont will also represent Hockey East in the tournament. UNH will be the No. 3 seed in the East Regional in Albany, N.Y., and will face Cornell on Friday at 6:30 p.m. UVM, the fourth seed in the West, will take on Wisconsin in St. Paul, Minn., on Friday at 9 p.m.
UNH won the Hockey East regular-season crown, but the Wildcats lost to Vermont in the tournament quarterfinals and needed help this weekend to make the NCAAs thanks to a dismal 1-5-1 out-of-conference record.
UVM was the exact opposite. The Catamounts barely made the conference playoffs, capturing the eighth and final playoff spot on the last day of the season. But their quarterfinal win over UNH and their stellar 6-1-0 non-league record were enough to grab an at-large bid.
