The Bruins have assigned defenseman Jeff Penner to Providence of the American Hockey League, general manager Peter Chiarelli announced after Boston's Thursday night win in Philadelphia.

The 22-year-old made his NHL debut in the Bruins' 4-3 overtime loss to the Maple Leafs on Tuesday. He logged just more than nine minutes of ice time and registered an even plus/minus. Penner was a healthy scratch for Thursday's 5-1 victory over the Flyers.

The Alaska-Fairbanks product and former CCHA All-Rookie Team honorable mention had six goals and 21 assists in 55 games in his second season with the Providence Bruins prior to being called up.
