The Bruins have recalled defenseman Jeff Penner from Providence of the AHL on an emergency basis, Boston general manager Peter Chiarelli announced Monday.

Penner will join the team for its game Tuesday night in Toronto, where coach Claude Julien will decide whether or not the 22-year-old gets to see his first NHL action.

After registering 10 goals and 16 assists in 80 games in his first AHL season last year, Penner has tallied six goals and 21 assists in 55 games so far this season for the P-Bruins.

Penner previously played one season at Alaska-Fairbanks, where he notched five goals and seven assists in 35 games and was named a CCHA All-Rookie Team honorable mention. The Bruins signed him as a free agent in March 2008.
