The flu bug appears to have bitten the Bruins, as the team has recalled forward Trent Whitfield and defenseman Jeff Penner on an emergency basis.

Though the team did not announce who would and would not play in Thursday night's matchup with the Penguins, the team was without Blake Wheeler, Johnny Boychuk and Dennis Wideman at its morning skate on Thursday. All three were said to be suffering from flu-like symptoms, and all would be game-time decisions.

NESN.com's James Murphy also reported that Andrew Ference could play. He has been out of action since the beginning of the month with a groin injury.

Whitfield, 32, has played with the Bruins for 14 games this season, registering his first assist as a Bruin on Jan. 21 against Columbus.

Penner, 22, made his NHL debut for the Bruins on March 9 in Toronto, registering three hits in his 9:17 of ice time.
