Former BC Star Nathan Gerbe Back in Boston With Sabres With injuries to Tim Connolly, Patrick Kaleta and Thomas Vanek, the Sabres recalled forwards Nathan Gerbe and Mark Mancari on Sunday. Both players are in the lineup Monday night and Gerbe was thrilled to be playing in Boston and at TD Garden again after some fond memories of playing there as a Boston College Eagle.

"It's pretty exciting," said Gerbe. "I definitely have some roots back here playing for BC. … I've been looking forward to playing in Boston for a while, so I'm excited I get the chance now."

Gerbe has three points in twelve career NHL games and 38 points in 44 games this season with the Portland Pirates, the Sabres' AHL affiliate.

In three seasons on the Heights, Gerbe had 71 goals and 133 points. He also won the Beanpot title and a national championship as a junior in 2008.

In fact, the Eagles are again headed to the Frozen Four after beating Yale 9-7 in the Northeast regional final on Sunday, a point Gerbe was more than happy to point out to Sabres teammate Mike Grier who played at Boston University from 1993-96.

"The [Beanpot] banner is up there, so I got a chance to point it out to him today," said Gerbe.

Gerbe has also been playing close attention to the Eagles' NCAA tournament run and got to watch the win over Yale on Sunday. Like many of those watching, Gerbe was amazed at the high-scoring nature of the game.

"I saw the shootout win for Boston College last night," he said. "I was joking around with the coaches telling them that defense wins championships, and they were laughing at me," said Gerbe. "It's great to see them back in the Frozen Four. At every level it's playoff time now, so it's always a pretty exciting time of year. Portland is so close that I was able to get down and see a couple of [Boston College] games this year."
