Jerry Jones’ Scoreboard to Blame for Potential New NFL Rule

Throughout the day, NESN.com has taken a look at several rules that are being discussed at this week's NFL owners meetings, from a new overtime proposition, to the further protection of defenseless players and long snappers to the stoppage of play if a ball carrier loses his helmet. Now, let’s wrap it up with what could potentially be known as “The Jerry Jones Rule.”

Proposed Rule
If a ball in play hits a scoreboard, the play is dead and will be replayed. It was put in place as a temporary rule last season after it was determined that the scoreboard at Cowboys Stadium could get hit by a punt. While it happened in the preseason, nothing during the regular season ever really flirted with the small oblong planet hanging from the roof at Jones' new masterpiece.

Will it Pass?
It was a temporary rule last season, mostly because there wasn't enough time before the regular season to hold any formal meetings. Since it’s apparent Jones won’t raise the scoreboard — and, at this point, he shouldn't have to — it only makes sense to put in some sort of contingency plan in case the ball ever does come in contact with the scoreboard.
