According to the Boston Herald, Julio Lugo was "not comfortable" with the Red Sox last season, but he is happy to be a member of the 2010 Cardinals.
"In order to play well, you have to be comfortable and healthy," Lugo told the paper. "It wasn't right at the end. I wasn't comfortable there, not at all."
Lugo signed a four-year, $36 million deal with the Red Sox after the 2006 season, but he failed to meet expectations. The shortstop hit just .251 and committed 42 errors in 266 games during his Red Sox career.
The shortstop claims injuries contributed to his dismal performance.
"I don't think they got to see me 100 percent healthy except for the 2007 World Series, when I played well," Lugo said. "They knew what I'm capable of, but they didn’t get to see as much as I wanted them to."
The Red Sox designated Lugo for assignment last July, paying the remaining $13.5 million on his contract and trading him to the Cardinals for outfielder Chris Duncan. Despite a difficult two and a half years in Boston, Lugo's happy to be in St. Louis.
"I'm here [with St. Louis] and happy," Lugo said. "And that's all that matters."
