Paul Pierce Named Eastern Conference Player of the Week

Paul Pierce might want to start ignoring the media more often.

The Celtics forward took a week off from talking to reporters, and during that time he averaged 24.8 points a game on 63 percent shooting to lead the C’s to a 4-0 record, netting himself the Eastern Conference player of the week honor.

Last week, Pierce’s scoring average was nearly seven points higher than his season average of 18.1. He was closer to his typical numbers in other categories, however, posting 3.8 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.8 steals a game to flesh out his stat line.

His success has translated to team success, too, as the Celtics topped 100 points in three of their four victories. Boston’s high-flying ways even afforded Pierce some degree of rest, as he managed to accumulate his impressive numbers in just 26.4 minutes a night. By comparison, as Pierce has needed to carry the team more at other times this season, Doc Rivers was forced to play him closer to 34 minutes a game.

A peaking and rested Pierce could be the key for the Celtics down the stretch as they prepare for the two-month grind of the NBA playoffs.
