During New England's training camp just prior to the 2009 regular season,
Seymour was dealt in a move that caught many by surprise and appeared
to be financially motivated, as he was eligible for free agency
following the season.
Now, the Patriots' loss is the Raiders' gain.
"Look at what he brought to our team — the ability of opponents or lack thereof to run at him on that side of the line of scrimmage," Cable told The Boston Globe.
The Raiders have applied the franchise tag to Seymour, which binds him to Oakland for the upcoming season at a high salary. The two may work out a contract extension, which it sounds like Cable would welcome.
"He was everything that I thought he would be," Cable said.
Seymour registered four sacks and 47 tackles in 2009, approximating his numbers from 2006, when Seymour and the Patriots went 12-4 and lost in the AFC championship game to the Indianapolis Colts.
But it isn't just Seymour's play on the field that has impressed Cable.
"The thing that I was probably most excited about was how much he
impacted our young players on our football team," Cable said. "He's been in the NFL
for quite some time and knows how to prepare, how to get himself ready,
how to take notes, the time it takes day to day, week to week as you go
through the season and ultimately how to take care of your body.
"I
think there was a lot of good lessons learned there for a bunch of
young football players."
