FORT MYERS, Fla — Hours after releasing one veteran left-handed reliever in Brian Shouse, the Red Sox signed another by bringing in Scott Schoeneweis as a non-roster player.

Schoeneweis, 36, signed a minor league deal and is expected to arrive at Boston's big league camp in Fort Myers on Saturday. He had allowed six runs in seven innings as a non-roster invitee with Milwaukee this spring before the Brewers released him Thursday.

The Duke University product was 1-2 with a 7.19 ERA with Arizona in 2009 and owns a career mark of 46-57 with nine saves and a 4.97 ERA. A World Series champion with the Angels in 2002, Schoeneweis has held left-handed hitters to a .227 average in his career with six teams.

The move was one of several on a busy day.

Shouse, also a lefty specialist, was released in the morning, seemingly cutting the candidates for open bullpen spots down by one. The club also acquired infielder Kevin Frandsen from San Francisco for a player to be named later or cash.

In addition, lefty Fabio Castro was optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket and outfielder Darnell McDonald was reassigned to the minor league camp.

When the dust settled, the Red Sox ended up with 39 players in their major league camp, including seven non-roster invitees.
