With Wednesday's spring training opener looming, the Red Sox made some minor moves on Monday, claiming right-hander Casey Fien off waivers from Detroit and designating Gaby Hernandez for assignment.

The 26-year-old Fien debuted in the major leagues last season and went 0-1 with a 7.94 ERA for the Tigers. In nine relief appearances, he struck out nine and walked six. Most of his season was spent with Triple-A Toledo, where he went 2-1 with 14 saves and a 3.41 ERA in 42 games. Fien struck out 66 batters, ranking second among all International League relief leaders in strikeouts per nine innings.

Fien was selected by the Tigers in the 20th round of the 2006 draft.

The Red Sox claimed Hernandez off waivers from Seattle on Feb. 10. He spent all of 2009 with Triple-A Tacoma, where he went 10-9 with a 5.23 ERA and 98 strikeouts. Hernandez was selected by the Mets in the third round of the 2004 draft.
