The Red Sox are searching high and low for another lefty out of the bullpen.

According to ESPN.com's Gordon Edes, the Red Sox sent a scout to Washington to watch Alan Embree work out near his home. At the moment, the Boston bullpen has two veteran southpaws in Hideki Okajima and Brian Shouse.

The 40-year-old Embree spent parts of four seasons with the Red Sox from 2002 to 2005. In 211 appearances, Embree went 8-9 with a 4.69 ERA and had 155 strikeouts in 178 1/3 innings pitched. Since being released by the Red Sox in 2005, Embree has made stops with the Yankees, Padres, A's and Rockies.

The 16-year veteran Embree's 2009 campaign was cut short on July 11 when a line drive by Atlanta's Martin Prado fractured his tibia.
