Beckett paced the competition with 39 percent of the voting while Jon Lester checked in at 35 percent and Wednesday’s starter, John Lackey, brought up the rear at 22 percent.
Why is Lackey so low? NESN’s experts discussed the topic on Wednesday’s edition of Red Sox Final.
“He’s the new guy,” anchor Tom Caron noted. “He’s got to earn respect. … You come in here, and it’s ‘What have you done in Boston?’
“He’s done fine for his first two starts.”
Lackey picked up his first win for the Red Sox Wednesday, limiting the Twins to two runs over 6 2/3 innings.
Analyst Jim Rice feels that the three pitchers may be asked to do too much in winning games — the offense has to help out, too.
“All these guys have a chance to win 20 games,” Rice noted. “[But] you got to give the pitchers a cushion where they can go out and relax.”
