Jerod Mayo now has a run-stuffing partner in the middle of the Patriots' defense.

New England has selected University of Florida linebacker Brandon Spikes with the 62nd overall pick in the NFL Draft. Spikes — the younger cousin of veteran linebacker Takeo Spikes — is a fiery leader and powerful hitter in the mold of his role model, Hall of Famer Dick Butkus.

The 22-year-old Brandon Spikes is considered among the top five inside linebackers in the 2010 draft class and should immediately step into the Patriots' front seven. Although he lacks ideal speed, evidenced by a 5.00 time in the 40-yard dash, Spikes plays with maximum energy and a high motor, enabling him to make play after play against opposing rushing attacks.

During his senior season, Spikes contributed 74 tackles, four sacks and four interceptions to coach Urban Meyer's defense. He led the Gators in tackles during the two previous years, amassing 131 as a sophomore and 93 as a junior.
