According to Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi of Fox Sports, the Red Sox are interested in trading for Diamondbacks' catcher Chris Snyder.
This wouldn't be the first time the Sox went to the desert in search of a catcher. Prior to the 2009 season, Boston reportedly offered (and obviously were denied) reliever Daniel Bard for Miguel Montero, who took over as the Arizona starting backstop last season.
The report indicates that Snyder is on the Sox’ "down-the-road hit list," according to one major-league source.
The 29-year-old Snyder is hitting .257 with a .721 OPS, one homer and seven RBIs through 10 games (35 at bats) this season. He is a .234 career hitter with 53 homers and 215 RBIs in 501 games (486 as a catcher). He started a career-high 106 games behind the dish in 2008, when he batted .237 with career-highs in homers (16) and RBIs (64).
Last seasons, opposing base stealers were 26-for-31 off Snyder and they’re 10-for-12 this season. Through 17 games this season, Red Sox' opponents were 34-for-35 in steals attempts against catchers Victor Martinez and Jason Varitek.
Snyder is making $4.75 million this season and $5.75 million in 2011. He has a $750,000 buyout for 2012.
