NESN insider Peter Gammons confirmed Tim Wakefield will be the odd man out of the Red Sox rotation when Daisuke Matsuzaka makes his return from the disabled list, and Gammons joined Tom Caron on W.B. Mason Extra Innings Live to discuss the move.
Wakefield has contributed to two World Series-champion teams, and Gammons understands the decision is one of many Terry Francona has faced this month.
“This has been a very stressful April for Terry Francona,” Gammons said. “He has a lot of difficult issues to deal with.”
Gammons feels Wakefield’s move could be temporary, but he also recognizes the Sox see Clay Buchholz as a key contributor in their rotation.
“This may be a short-term thing,” Gammons said. “It’s clear that they
still think, come September, Buchholz is gonna be their No. 4 guy.”
Francona’s choice wasn’t an easy one because of the Red Sox’ surplus of quality arms.
“It’s not an easy decision,” Gammons said. “It’s a very tough call.”
