UMass Names Revere Native Sharon Dawley New Women's Basketball Coach Boston College wasn't the only school to hire a new basketball coach Tuesday.

According to Boston.com, former University of Vermont women's coach Sharon Dawley has been named the new coach at UMass.

"I am extremely excited for this opportunity to be the head women's basketball coach at the University of Massachusetts and return to my home state," Dawley told the Web site. "UMass has been a school I admired growing up and I believe this program has a lot of potential and opportunity for growth, and that has me excited."

Dawley has spent the entirety of her coaching career in New England. The St. Anselm College graduate began her coaching career at Tufts University in 1984, compiling a 137-62 record in nine seasons with the Jumbos. She served as an assistant with Dartmouth College from 1993-97 and was promoted to associate head coach in July of 1997.

The Revere, Mass., native has spent the last seven seasons as the coach at the University of Vermont. Dawley compiled a 128-86 record with the Catamounts and led the school to its first NCAA tournament victory in March.

Dawley replaces Marnie Dacko, whose contract was not renewed after eight seasons with the school.
