Akron Tries to Keep LeBron James in Cleveland With ‘LeBron Appreciation Day’

With LeBron James’ future in Cleveland unknown, Cavs fans in
Akron are pulling out all the stops to keep their hometown hero.

The NBA’s reigning MVP will be recognized on June 19 at a celebration
called “LeBron
Appreciation Day”
in the University of Akron’s InfoCision Stadium.
The event is meant to drum up support for keeping James in Cleveland and
ideally to convince him to re-sign with the Cavaliers when he is
eligible to become a free agent in July.

Speculation has been running rampant about where James will end up next
season since the Cavaliers made yet another untimely exit from the playoffs,
eliminated by the Boston Celtics in the Eastern Conference semifinals. Potential destinations include the Cleveland Cavaliers, the New
York Knicks and the Chicago Bulls.

If recent public appearances are any indication, it seems likely that
James will be saying farewell to the team he’s led for seven seasons.
At a Cleveland slam dunk competition, James made a less than
enthusiastic appearance, arriving late and acting aloof.

Akron community leaders are scheduled to participate in the event,
including Mayor Don Plusquellic. It is unknown if James will attend the
celebration.
