Dana Barros Selects Red Auerbach as Boston’s Biggest Sports Legend

Dana Barros Selects Red Auerbach as Boston's Biggest Sports Legend Among the Celtics, there are plenty of names to choose from when considering the biggest legend of them all — but none was greater than the picture of success himself, Red Auerbach.

NESN insider Dana Barros stopped by Wednesday’s edition of SportsDesk to chat with Cole Wright about his pick to win NESN.com’s bracket, and he went with the storied Celtics coach.

“I can’t even believe you’re asking me that,” Barros said after Cole asked his opinion on who is the greatest of them all. “As great as [Bill] Russell and [Larry] Bird were, Red Auerbach was the catalyst to this whole organization. Without Red, there is no Larry Bird or Bill Russell. … This guy exemplifies CEO ownership of an organization and how to put it together. Everyone else copies what he’s done in the past, so I would say Red Auerbach hands down.”

Cole and Barros also chatted about the Celtics’ Eastern Conference semifinals series against the Cavs — and when asked whether Rajon Rondo is outperforming LeBron James, Dana wasn’t quite so quick to jump to the Celtic’s defense.

“If you look at it realistically, for the next five, maybe 10 years, LeBron is going to be the best guy on the court in whatever series he plays in,” Barros said. “If he wasn’t there, I would definitely say my man Rajon Rondo, but LeBron definitely is something you really can’t deal with and hopefully we can continue doing what we’ve been doing.”
