Batting leading off and filling the role of designated hitter for the Triple-A Pawtucket Red Sox, Jacoby Ellsbury went 1-for-3 on Monday afternoon in his first game action since leaving Boston's win in Kansas City on April 11.
Ellsbury grounded out to short and then to second in his first two at-bats, but he jumped on the first pitch of this third at-bat, singling into left field. The ball was misplayed by left fielder Leonard Davis, allowing Ellsbury to take two extra bases. Josh Reddick followed that up with a sacrifice fly, scoring Ellsbury.
In his next plate appearance, Ellsbury didn't swing the bat, taking all six pitches and working a walk. Reddick then tripled to drive in Ellsbury, who scored his second run of the afternoon.
Ellsbury is expected to play again on Tuesday, this time for the Double-A Portland Sea Dogs at 6 p.m. in Maine. He will then get examined by Red Sox doctors on Wednesday in Boston.
