Confirming earlier reports, Red Sox manager Terry Francona recently informed reporters in Tampa Bay that Mike Cameron will be activated prior to Tuesday's game at Tropicana Field.
Cameron, who last played April 18, has been sidelined with an abdominal strain. He hit a walk-off home run in his eighth and final minor league rehab game Sunday afternoon to lift Double-A Portland to a win.
The 37-year-old went on the disabled list the same day as left fielder Jacoby Ellsbury, who returned this weekend in Philadelphia. Whenever those two are back in the Red Sox starting lineup with regular right fielder J.D. Drew, it will be the first time the trio had started together since April 9.
Cameron hit .233 with no home runs, no RBIs and just two runs scored in 11 games before going on the DL.
Darnell McDonald, one of a handful of outfielders who helped Boston fill the gaps when Cameron and Ellsbury were out, is the likely candidate to be sent down. McDonald enters Monday's game hitting .263 with three home runs and 11 RBIs in 31 games.
The Sox made a move prior to the Cameron transaction before Monday's contest. Righty reliever Scott Atchison, who was with the team in April, has been brought up from Triple-A Pawtucket. Infielder Angel Sanchez was sent down, the reports said.
Sanchez started in place of shortstop Marco Scutaro last Thursday.
