Kendry Morales' broken ankle — suffered in the celebration following his walk-off home run on Saturday — was a freak occurrence. It forced the Angels to institute some new rules regarding celebrations (which were put into action just one game later) and leaves the team without its power-hitting first baseman in the middle of the lineup.
An ESPN.com report said that Morales could return this year if all goes well after surgery, but it's not out of the realm of possibility that the team may look outside its roster for some help.
The Boston Herald speculated that Mike Lowell could be the person to provide the help, now that Lowell's spent a couple of games at first base this season. CSNNE.com also noted that Lowell, who expressed his frustrations regarding lack of playing time earlier this month, could spell Angels DH Hideki Matsui against lefties. On Monday, however, WEEI.com reported that, according to a baseball source, the Angels have "not yet shown interest" in Lowell.
Through 52 games, Lowell has appeared in fewer than half of them for the Red Sox, batting .239 with a home run and 10 RBIs in 67 at-bats. Morales had been batting .290 with 11 homers and 39 RBIs before sustaining the injury.
