A group of soldiers, many of them wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan, will bike ride across the nation to honor their comrades still fighting. The soldiers will depart from California on May 22 and head toward the East Coast.
The group is being led by World T.E.A.M. Sports as part of its Sea to Shining Sea Ride Across America event. The ride will start at San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge and span 4,000 miles ending in Yorktown, Va., on July 24. The ride will last 63 days and will cross the Sierra Nevada Mountains in Nevada and the Rocky Mountains in Colorado.
The riders will also make stops at the 9/11 Memorial in Shanksville, Pa. and historic Williamsburg in Virginia.
Riding along will be several high-profile military and government figures. Army Brig. Gen. Arnold N. Gordon-Bray will be joining the ride along with retired Marine Corps Lt. Gen. Robert Magnus and Ambassador Paul Bremer, who served as ambassador to Iraq during its reconstruction from 2003 to 2004.
The ride is the least they can do.
"The selfless service of these warriors, including the injuries they sustained, is evidence of their courage, honor and commitment," Magnus said. "Their indomitable will to succeed by completing the daunting Sea to Shining Sea ride is a testament to today’s American military men and women. I commend World T.E.A.M. Sports and State Farm for their own commitment to making this great ride possible."
World T.E.A.M. is a nonprofit organization that focuses on bringing together athletes both healthy and disabled in sporting events.
