When a bullfighter can get a horn through his jaw, nobody can really blame him if he decides to let the bull win the fight.
Even though Spanish bullfighter Julio Aparicio survived being a kabob for a while, Mexican bullfighter Christian Hernandez decided not to take his chances, and it landed him in jail.
The 22-year-old was arrested for a breach of contract violations — or as we like to call "getting in over his head" — after quickly exiting the ring twice.
"There are some things you must be aware of about yourself," Hernandez told the media after the match. "I didn’t have the ability, I didn’t have the balls. This is not my thing."
Hernandez's last run-in with a bull resulted in a nasty leg injury a few months earlier, and that possibly added to his newfound phobia.
On top of that, Dr. Mark Sheldon Llyod, in an article in England's Annals of the Royal College of Surgeons of England, went into great detail into just what makes such a wound so painful.
"Bull horn wounds are usually penetrating and contusive; they have special characteristics, the entry point being small and corresponding with a gap in the aponeurosis," Llyod wrote. "Two or more deep wound tracts may be present, hiding important muscular destruction. Wounds are often contaminated with multiple foreign bodies such as cloth fragments, dirt and horn chips."
Not to mention the possible damage to other, more sensitive male areas.
"The second commonest site of bull gore injury in the matador is the perineal area," he wrote. "Scrotal avulsion often requires plastic surgical reconstruction."
With risks like that, nobody (except maybe the crowd at Mexico City's Plaza) can really blame Hernandez for his cold feet.
