But the real story was during his postgame interview, when the “beast” was given a name by a handy, significantly shorter sidekick.
“We’re like Shrek and Donkey — best friends,” said teammate Nate Robinson. “They can’t separate us.”
And “Big Baby” does fit the bill. He’s big, loud and defiantly green.
That little exchange brought to mind other postgame shows that have made us laugh, laugh some more, or wonder what exactly was going on.
1920’s Reporter Guy
Ah the ‘20s, a simpler time, a time when prohibition left reporters unable to ask questions in anything other than corny nicknames, strange metaphors and references to long-dead dance moves.
Scoop Callahan is actually a running gag of a Dallas sports radio show. But the 1920’s reporter guy somehow has managed to infiltrate countless postgame news conferences, and hilarity ensues.
Or Bill Belichick and Tom Brady.
They are who we thought they were.
Remember 2006, when the Chicago Bears were a perfect 5-0 to start the season? Yeah, neither do we.
But far more memorable was Arizona Cardinals head coach Dennis Green‘s reaction after the fact. The Cardinals were up by 20 points over the Bears by halftime and collapsed, allowing them to escape a scare and move up to 6-0 on the season. The Cardinals had just “let them off the hook,” and Green wasn’t happy about it.
Who needs practice?
OK, Allen Iverson doesn’t like practicing sometimes. Fair enough, but when you somehow manage to say the word “practice” enough times that the reporters are laughing at your inexplicable repeated use of the word, then it may be time to call it a day.
I’m a man! I’m 40!
Last but not least, we can’t forget about Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy‘s offer to fight. Never mind that his team won against Texas Tech; the more important issue is an article about his quarterback that may or may not have made him cry. He also set forth a new rule: If you’re gonna fight someone, they better be at least 40.
