With Victor Martinez being placed on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday, the Red Sox recalled Gustavo Molina from Triple-A Pawtucket.
Molina, not related to the trio of Molina brothers throughout the majors, will catch Wakefield when he makes his start Friday night.
Molina has experience catching the knuckleball after catching some for Dodgers knuckleballer Charlie Haeger in the minors as well as catching a side session for Wakefield during spring training.
“As far as the Red Sox are concerned, that makes him the best option,” The Boston Globe’s Peter Abraham said Tuesday on Red Sox GameDay Live. “Mark Wagner and Dusty Brown are both out with hand injuries and Gustavo Molina was the most healthy, experienced guy that they had in Triple-A and he’s going to get a chance to help the Red Sox until Victor Martinez gets back.”
