That's not due to faults of their own, but rather their competition of Bill Russell and Bobby Orr.
Williams drew the matchup with Orr, which created a comparison between one of the greatest hitters of all time and one of the greatest hockey players of all time (though anyone from Boston will tell you that you can easily remove "one of" from both of those descriptions). The relation of the two men, their two sports and their two eras didn't make it easy, but in the end, Orr received 56 percent of the fans' votes.
On the other side, the comparison was a bit easier: Russell vs. Bird. Both are legendary Celtics, and both brought the NBA to new heights, yet there was one aspect to Russell's game that even Bird could not come close to matching: rings. Russell's 11 championships were likely the difference-maker in the semifinal matchup with Bird, whose three championships were nothing to sneeze at. Russell won, though, receiving 58 percent of the votes.
Now, Orr and Russell meet in the final round to determine who is Boston's Biggest Sports Legend. The impossible decisions from the semifinal round are about to become much more difficult.
