The first day of the much-anticipated World Cup is in the books. All four teams in Group A played Friday, starting with host nation South Africa against Mexico, followed by France against Uruguay.

South Africa 1, Mexico 1
Mexico controlled most of the scoreless first half, but South Africa got on the board first in the 55th minute. The feisty South Africa squad couldn't hold the lead, though, as Mexico tied the game in the 79th minute.

France 0, Uruguay 0
Not even a red card to Uruguay’s Nicolas Lodeiro in the 81st minute could help France find the net. Now, the 2006 runner-ups face a little bit more pressure to advance to the next round.
