Daisuke Matsuzaka ‘Just Didn’t Have the Pitches When He Needed to Have Them’

Daisuke Matsuzaka 'Just Didn't Have the Pitches When He Needed to Have Them' Daisuke Matsuzaka struggled again in the first inning Tuesday night in Tampa, but it was his inability to make the big pitch that ended up costing him.

Matsuzaka pitched five-plus innings, gave up five runs — four earned – and was unable to hold the early lead the Red Sox built against Rays starting pitcher Matt Garza.

"The game was kind of a microcosm of the entire Daisuke season saga," Bob Ryan said on W.B. Mason's Red Sox Extra Innings. "He wasn't horrible, he wasn't get smacked around, he just didn't have the pitches when needed to have them."
