Eight-time Olympic gold medalist swimmer Jenny Thompson says she was punched in the face in a failed bid to steal her scooter in Brookline, Mass.

The 37-year-old swimmer was riding through the Boston suburb on Monday night when two people got out of a vehicle behind her. The attackers then punched her, pushed her down and tried to grab her ride but the 12-time medal winner screamed for help and was able to hang onto the scooter long enough for the would-be thieves to scurry off empty-handed.

Reports indicate that three teenagers were arrested later Monday night with stolen scooters.

Thompson last won a medal in the 2004 Athens Games.
