The Lowell Spinners are adding some pop to their lineup. Literally.
During their July 17 game against the Aberdeen Ironbirds, the Spinners will attempt to break a world record by having the largest collection of people popping Bubble Wrap simultaneously. All fans in attendance will be given a one square foot piece of Bubble Wrap as they enter the park, and the attempt will occur in the middle of the third inning.
According to the team’s official website, everyone in the stadium will participate — from the fans, the staff and even players themselves. The last time a record was broken during a Spinners game was in 2004, when the largest game of "Duck, Duck, Goose" was held after an August game.
The Bubble Wrap stunt is part of a celebration of the 50th birthday of the packing material. Other events will include a Bubble Wrap dance floor and dance-off.
"Bubble Wrap is one of the most addicting, unnoticed nuances in life," said Jon Goode, Spinners vice president of communications. "We just hope that fans will be able to resist the urge to pop the Bubble Wrap before the record attempt."
Also part of the festivities will be a prize for the 50th fan that enters the park. That fan will have a chance to win a year’s supply of popcorn if the 50th out of the game is recorded on a popup.
First pitch is scheduled for 5:05 p.m. at LeLacheur Park.
