Derek Jeter has had a lot of New Yorkers cheer his name since first patrolling shortstop at Yankee Stadium over a decade ago.

But Jeter’s name was mentioned in a different setting recently, according to the Huffington Post, when NYPD officer Carlos Olmeda awoke from an 11-day coma and his first words were “Derek Jeter.”

Olmeda was hit by a motorcycle and left unconscious while he was chasing thieves in Bensonhurst back in May. After the accident, New York mayor Michael Bloomberg visited Olmeda in the hospital.

“He is in very grave condition,” Bloomberg said. “At this point I think it’s in the hands of God.”

Fortunately, Olmeda has made nearly a full recovery and was recently invited to Yankee Stadium to meet his favorite shortstop and the rest of the Yankees team, as seen in the video below.
