Major League Baseball will open its 2011 season on April 1. No joke.

According to USA Today, the league plans on starting the 2011 schedule on April 1, a Friday. This is a change from the traditional Opening Day, which usually comes on a Monday. In essence, the league is pushing the start of the season up three days.

With the new scheduling format, the 2011 season would end on Sept. 28. Conversely, the 2010 season is slated to end on Oct. 3. The 2011 postseason would likely begin Sept. 30 or Oct. 1.

By making this change, the scheduled date for Game 7 of the World Series moves back into October as opposed to this season, where Game 7 would likely fall on Nov. 4, the same date it would have fallen on last year.

"Anything we could do to finish in October is what I wanted to do," MLB commissioner Bud Selig told USA Today. "It shows how serious we are in doing this. I feel very good about it, and am pleased at everybody's reaction."
