The Red Sox have needed outfield help for weeks as we approached the trade deadline. In the moments before it came and went, they searched from within for some assistance.
Ryan Kalish, a rising prospect who has been red-hot at Triple-A Pawtucket, was selected to the major league roster, taking the spot of Jeremy Hermida, who was designated for assignment.
Kalish’s major league debut will see him batting eighth and playing left field for for the Sox as they take on the Detroit Tigers on Saturday afternoon. Hermida, who was signed in January to a $3.345 million deal, will have to pass through waivers before the club can decide whether to keep him in the system or trade him.
The 26-year-old Hermida had been on the DL with four broken ribs until being activated on the recent West Coast road trip. But the slump he was in before the injury simply continued as he had hit 2-for-20 (.100) with nine strikeouts since his return. He has also struggled defensively for much of the season.
Kalish, 22, is hitting .294 in 37 games with Pawtucket, but .323 with four home runs in July.
