The longest sellout streak in Major League Baseball history hit a milestone Sunday afternoon when the Red Sox sold out Fenway Park for the 600th consecutive home date.
The sellout streak — the longest in baseball history and second-longest in American professional sports — started on May 15, 2003 in the second year of the current ownership.
"We congratulate [Red Sox fans] for achieving this extraordinary milestone and for the passion and dedication they have for the game, for their team and for their ballpark," Red Sox president and CEO Larry Luchino said in a statement. "We will continue to work hard to ensure that we are worthy of their loyal and steadfast support."
The Red Sox continue to build on the record major league sellout streak they broke on Sept. 8, 2008. The previous mark had been set by the Cleveland Indians when they sold out 455 straight games between 1995 and 2001.
The longest streak in American professional sports history still belong to the NBA's Portland Trailblazers who sold out 744 games between 1977 and 1995.
Red Sox players, ownership and staff passed out baseballs commemorating the streak's milestone to fans before Sunday's game with the Rangers at Fenway Park.
