Josh Childress isn't the only player coming back from Olympiakos to the NBA this summer as shooting guard Von Wafer is now a Boston Celtic.
Wafer, drafted out of Florida State in 2005, has been a career journeyman. He was picked by the Los Angeles Lakers, but subsequently spent stints in the NBDL, with the Los Angeles Clippers, Denver Nuggets, and Portland Trailblazers. Eventually, he found success in Houston, posting a career year with the Rockets in 2008-09.
That season, Wafer averaged almost 10 points per game, shooting 39 percent from behind the arc in 19 minutes a night while filling the void left by an injured Tracy McGrady.
After the successful campaign, Wafer opted to cash in on his heightened value by accepting a $10 million deal with Olympiakos in Greece.
Wafer will be coming off of the Celtics bench to provide much-needed depth. He will spell Ray Allen at two guard, allowing the veteran to rest. At 6-foot-5, Wafer will match Allen as the tallest guard on the team.
With Wafer, a re-signed Nate Robinson, and rookie Avery Bradley, the Celtics now have a multitude of serviceable options coming off of the bench to rotate with stars Allen and Rajon Rondo.
Terms of the contract have not been disclosed.
